Day
18 – Cable Gap Shelter to Fontana Dam Shelter (Fontana Hilton)6.6 miles, 165.8 total
For most of the hike today, I could see Fontana Lake in the distance,
and even Fontana Dam. It was really
quite a sight. This shelter is known as
the Fontana Hilton because it is located next to bathrooms and even has a
public shower! And it overlooks the
lake, and has a large fire pit with benches.
It is really gorgeous.
So I took a shower and headed into town for lunch and resupply. I had half of a large pizza and probably four
Mr. Pibbs. We resupplied at the General
Store in Fontana Village. Then, we
basically just sat in the rocking chairs on the front porch for like two
hours! (Chairs are really something you
start to miss on the trail.)
Fontana also had a little ice cream shop inside, so I bought and
devoured a bowl of Moose Tracks.
But there was a Mini Cooper convention in town or something! Hundreds (okay, maybe like one hundred) of
Mini Coopers with all types of paint jobs and body kits, old and new, were just
driving all over the place. It was
crazy. Apparently a lot of the roads
around Fontana Village are just fun to drive on. This group has been coming for over five
years!
After the resupply, we went back to the shelter to hang out, and there
were tons of hikers there, all just talking about life and hanging out. It was like a miniature party. Lots of fun!
