Day
12 – Carter Gap Shelter to Long Branch Shelter
8.6
miles, 102.5 miles total
Last night I decided to sleep in the shelter instead of a tent,
because I knew it was going to rain.
Good thing I did, because it rained on and off throughout the
night. After about 8 a.m., the rain held
off until 11:30 or so, then it rained through the midday until about 2 p.m.
At mile 100, there is this fire tower on Alpert Mountain, but the top
was locked unfortunately. I still got
some great photos, however. About 2.5
miles later, we went to a BRAND NEW SHELTER, really nice, two stories, which
still had the fresh-cut wood smell.
Since the weather was miserable and the shelter was so nice, we
decided to call it a day and stay there.
I am now over 100 miles, my legs and feet are “broken in,” and I think I
am going to start doing some longer days.
Adams day 11 and my day two... 12 miles again. At 62 years old, I move a LOT SLOWER than Adam but I keep plodding on. The weather has been nice. Tonight I sleep in a shelter avoiding having to pitch and repack the tent. I'm having a good time and amazingly I'm not sore or stiff.

Wake up looks like it might be raining today...
... and it does . Today was a little shorter than the last two, a little over 8miles and not as much uphill but it has been raining off and on most of the afternoon. I was really happy to see the shelter but the new trail down it is slippery and I take a tumble. No harm down but I struggle to get back on my feet.
The shelter is packed with people but it has plenty of room. I probably won't see any of these folks again but I make friends fast and share good conversation with my new trail friends made.
