Day 14 - Turning it up a notch.

April 29, 2013
Day 14 – Winding Stair Gap to Wayah Bald Shelter
11.0 miles, 120.8 total

This morning I had breakfast at Hardee’s.  Yum.   I ended up taking the 11 a.m. shuttle back to the trail because I wanted to be lazy; it was a good choice.

Once I got back on the trail, I turned it up a notch.  I went 11 miles in 4.5 hours, which is about 2.5 mph, much faster than usual.  I liked it, a lot.

Anyway, there was also more trail magic, at the top of Wayah Bald and one of the hardest hills yet.  This guy was giving out PB&Js, Goldfish, other snacks, and he even had beer.   It was a great ending to the day.   From Wayah Bald you could see Albert Mountain and the firetower, and it was “only” 10 miles away, but it looked like it was ten times that.

Once I got to the shelter, I took a nap and then made dinner.   I had one of my free Mountain House meals, Beef Stew, and I could barely finish it.  It was the first time that I almost couldn’t finish a meal and was completely full.

Tonight at the shelter is Alana, Leo, Jasmine, Boogie, Slo’Goin’, Bill, Paul.   However, we are all really spread out.  Not a lot of campsites.  We think Paul and Sarah are only one shelter behind us.
