Day
17 – Sassafras Gap to Cable Gap Shelter15.2 miles, 159.2 total
Today’s hike was pretty fun. No
uphills were longer than a mile, unlike the 7-mile uphill yesterday. Most of it was just bouncing up and down
ridge lines.
But there was one uphill, called Jacob’s Ladder, that rises 600 feet
in about half a mile. It was the
steepest climb so far. Other than that,
it was a pretty relaxed day.
The shelter tonight isn’t much, but the surrounding area is really
nice. I’m camped right next to a
stream. Tonight, none of the normal
people are here, so I guess they are a shelter back or so – except Bill, who
rode in around 9 p.m. with his headlamp on, in the dark. Oh, and Rider and Harry are somewhere up
ahead, I think.
For dinner, I had another one of my free Mountain House dinners,
Lasagna with Meat Sauce, and it was excellent.
I also had hot chocolate to drink.
It was really a lovely ending to the day. Tomorrow, I go to Fontana Dam!
